Structural Search and Rescue (SAR) Practice Test

In this method, a fixed reference point serves as the anchor for the entire search. The leader stays at that point, while the rest of the team fans out through the room to search in a coordinated pattern. This setup creates clear orientation and ensures complete coverage because everyone works from a common reference and can report findings or hazards back to the anchor quickly. The team can sweep outward in radial sectors or along planned lines, keeping track of which areas have been checked and which remain.

Other approaches involve moving the anchor or the search pattern: a circular pattern around a point focuses on circling the center, dividing the space into zones assigns each person to a specific area, and a sweep pattern typically has the team moving together along a path with the leader guiding the motion. None of those emphasize maintaining a fixed anchor while team members spread out to search the space as effectively as oriented search.
